October 1st is National Seniors Day in Canada. To mark this important date the Grand River Council on Aging (GRCOA) is hosting two age-friendly events in celebration and recognition of the elders who have made this country great.

The first event, “Taco Fest”, takes place on Sunday September 30, 2018 in Harmony Square in Downtown Brantford from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. In 2017, the GRCOA welcomed nearly 700 people to Taco Fest. The 2nd annual event promises to be even bigger and better with more Taco Vendors.

For $5 admission, festival goers can sample tacos presented by a variety of chefs, groups and restaurants. Afterwards, they can vote for their favourite taco for the ‘People’s Choice Award’. The winner of last year’s award was Burrito Brothers, located on Dalhousie Street.

While munching on tacos, people can wander through a Marketplace of products and services displayed by local organizations and businesses. D. J. Spice Productions will once again take to the main stage, offering a mix of fun and easy listening music guaranteed to get toes tapping and heads nodding to the beat.

Solis Foods is pleased to be the lead sponsor for this fun-filled festival, contributing the hundreds of taco shells needed by the Taco Vendors to fill with their own special taco mix. Other sponsors include the Alzheimer Society, Amber Lea Place Retirement Home, Downtown Brantford Business Improvement Area, Brant County Health Unit, Revera-Charlotte Villa, Grand River Community Health Centre, Grand River Healthy Communities, Home Instead, Nancy Tomkins Denturist and Rotary Sunrise.

The second great activity takes place the next day on Monday, October 1, 2018. Due to continued popularity, the “Workshop on a Bus” returns for its sixth year. Discover the many age-friendly features in the fully-accessible City buses. Before boarding the bus, riders can enjoy complimentary coffee and muffins.

Experience first-hand the smooth, comfortable ride as the bus takes a tour around the City. At four designated stops, experts will board the bus to make mini-presentations about activities and service. Stops include the Brantford Public Library, the Beckett Adult Leisure Centre, the Grand River Community Health Centre and the Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre. The tour concludes with a beautiful lunch at the Airport Community Hall. Space is limited so register by calling the Brant County Health Unit by September 24 at 519.753.4937, Ext.465.

Hope to see you in the Square or on the bus!
