Event Details

Glenhyrst Art Gallery of Brant is seeking artists to submit proposals to create a sculpture to commemorate the Walter Gretzky parking spot at the Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre located at 254 North Park Street, Brantford.  The sculpture will become the property of the City of Brantford and add to their growing public art collection.

An artist(s) will be selected by a partner-led jury, through a process involving a written statement of approach, qualifications, and historical documentation.    The artist selection process will be managed by Glenhyrst.  The artist award will be $10,000.  Submission deadline is Wed. May 17, 2023 at 5:00pm.

Walter Gretzky, born Oct. 8, 1938 is best known as the father of ice hockey legend Wayne Gretzky.  The elder Gretzky, an avid hockey player as a youth and a keen analyst of the game, is credited by his famous son as playing a key role in his phenomenal success as a player.  Walter Gretzky is well known in his own right for his contributions to minor hockey in Canada, and for his dedication to helping many local, provincial, and national charities, for which he has been honoured and recognized.

This sculpture dedicated to Mr. Gretzky is a thank you and acknowledgement of his deep dedication to minor sports in Brantford as well as his contribution to local charities and interests.

The work will be created utilizing the many sticks left behind on the parking spot when he passed.
