Sopranos Ariel Harwood-Jones and Stacey Clark perform Couperin’s sublime lament
Leçons de Ténèbres. Supported by Joseph Phillips on gamba and organist Nathan Nykor. Written for the liturgies of Holy Week, this collection of three lessons has each verse preceded by a melisma on the first letter of the Hebrew text. The last lesson, where the two voices perform superb appoggiatura, ornaments, dissonances and vocalizing, is considered one of the undisputed peaks of Baroque vocal music.
