Event Details

The Brantford Film Group belongs to the TIFF Film Circuit and are able to show films that are often not on offer locally; many are festival prize-winners, but are not the big commercial block busters.  Some are Canadian films and some are foreign films.  Our profits go to local  charities.

Golda, American, United Kingdom.  1hr 40 minutes

Golda Meir, Israel’s fourth prime minister (Helen Mirren) faced powerful challenges and made tough decisions as Israel fought against Egypt, Syria and Jordan, during the Yom Kippur War in 1973. Helen Mirren’s masterful portrayal of Golda’s sharp intellect and steely resolve illustrate what formidable force the elderly stateswoman brought to any negotiation.

With an effective Middle East peace process still unrealized, this film offers an Israeli perspective on the controversial legacy of a tough but compassionate female leader who persuaded cunning politicians (including Henry Kissinger, played by Live Schreiber) and tough military men to follow through on her ideas.  Golda prophetically observed, “You cannot shake hands with a clenched fist.”
